MECH200 CNC Coaster project

Lessons Learned

Time management

I sound like a broken record, but I was unable to complete my coaster due to poor planning on my part. Read on for more tips!

Tips for upcoming students:

  • Schedule your exam early, the material is covered fairly early on in the course, and any TA or GTA will be happy to run through the questions and chat with you before the exam takes place

  • In this case especially, DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS

  • Do some light research, watch some machining videos on YouTube (OxtoolCo, Abom79, Clickspring, Saunders Machineworks, etc.) They are both entertaining and very educational when it comes to machining. Specifically Saunders Machineworks is a wealth of knowledge for early CNC users

  • The EMEC is usually less busy early in the morning, and early in the year. It’s good practice to get things scheduled early, and worked on early

  • Although the CNC milling station can be intimidating, it’s actually one of the more relaxed assignments for the semester. The machine does the hard work, and you have a pleasant chat with your TA about the process

  • You will thank yourself for getting out ahead of the rush and making sure you have enough time to complete your projects. Trust me
